According to the 2021 Census, Derby had approximately 249 children under the age of four, with 66 per cent identifying as First Nations. The absence of culturally safe infrastructure and programs has created significant barriers to early learning, child development, and school readiness. Through the Early Years Partnership (EYP) – a collaborative initiative between the WA state government, Minderoo Foundation, and local communities – the Derby community has championed the need for a purpose-built, culturally safe place designed to support children and their familiies.

About the Centre:

Ngunga Group Womens Aboriginal Corporation through the Early Years Partnership, developed a plan for a purpose-built Early Learning and Family Centre.

The design draws inspiration from the boab nut (Larrkardiy), symbolising connection to Country and culture.

The centre will serve as a hub offering:

  • Playgroups, early learning (childcare), and occasional care
  • After-school care and school holiday programs
  • Family workshops, support services, and training opportunities

The facility will include two buildings under one roof:

  • Childcare centre (up to 48 children)
  • After-school care centre (30–35 children)

Funding

Through the EYP, funding has been secured for this important infrastructure.

This includes significant contributions from:

  • WA state government
  • Commonwealth Government (Building Early Education Fund)
  • Minderoo Foundation

Impact

The Derby Early Learning and Family Centre will provide culturally safe, high-quality early learning opportunities for First Nations children in Derby.

It will improve school readiness and family wellbeing for Derby, Mowanjum, and Pandanus Park communities through high quality education, holistic support and a culturally safe environment.
